2018 Varsity Team Goals of Coach Gibowski
- Improve every player’s serve, including adding a spin-serve to each player’s repertoire.
- Make players be more aware of the return of serve by hitting ¼, ½ and full swings and stepping into the return of a second serve.
- Constant emphasis on how more points are disproportionately decided on unforced errors rather than on hitting winners.
- How playing short-stroke "small ball" over the net is a great way to warm up in practice and before a match.
- Having players be more aware of closing out a game, set or match when ahead by being focused and putting pressure on an opponent.
- Emphasize the continental grip for nearly every shot except the forehand (“hammer hammer” for the continental and “slammer slammer” for the forehand)
- Have players improve their footwork, especially with the split-step.
- Increase doubles’ teams positioning strategy through “shading.”
- Being clear about penalties for missing a practice or match (usually only allowed because of absence of school day) Players and parents will receive written requirements/penalties before the season begins. Players missing practice or matches hurt the team and will be penalized by not playing in a match.
- Encouraging players not to just stay until the very end of a home match, but watching and cheering on their teammates who are still playing.
- Enthusiastically instill the love of the game of tennis and how it can be a life-long sport.
